Sources & Hoaxes, Part 1
Since I'm a librarian, I wanted to share my favorite source of information about why the 3 week "extended spring break" is important in Ohio, why Disney World closed, and stuff like that. With some explanation.
And maybe memes.
Because massive multi-national corporations are closing and taking care of their employees in ways they haven't before.
We may have bailed out Wall Street to the tune of 1.5 trillion (WTAF, y'all?!?!?!), but these closures mean that these huge corporations are losing A LOT of money. And that is NOT a decision any of them take lightly or based on media alone.
(Also, why am I so fixated on Disney? Loads of reasons, but mostly because I am ALWAYS fixated on Disney, and also it is a MASSIVE business that employs 62,000 in Orlando ALONE.)
The suggested reading list of (mostly YA) books that are found in my school's library that specifically deal with pandemics and medicine gone wrong that I made for my kids when I knew I couldn't come back to school before our three week spring break.
There are obviously MANY more, but I held this list to the most pertinent ones that were currently available in my library at the time I wrote the blog.
Also my friend Bradley sent me this bootleg of Heart of Stone from his night seeing SIX (night before it was scheduled to open officially) and it is G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S. and feels very timely as I'm separated from my family for illness.
And maybe memes.
Why close stuff?
- Best (interactive!) explanation of flattening the curve definitely goes to the New York Times for How Much Worse the Coronavirus Could Get, in Charts.
- Dr. Amy Acton explains that at least 100,000 people in Ohio have the virus, but the number could be up to 300,000 already... but Ohio only has 1500 tests.
- Governor DeWine is super republican in most ways, but he is deferring to medical experts in this case, which is not something most party-line republicans are doing. Risking the ire of Trump isn't pretty for most republicans, but DeWine is being ballsy and doing what doctors are saying instead of following the republican line. (You're badass on this, Governor DeWine! I appreciate you!)
Major props to my acquaintance Philip Smythe, who worked through an explanation with his team and is director of strategic initiatives for a pharmaceutical company and whose wife sent me this:
I would think if anyone needed to work through the scenario, it's probably people who are planning what pharma companies should be doing. *shrug emoji*
How do I know it's not a media hoax?
Because massive multi-national corporations are closing and taking care of their employees in ways they haven't before.
We may have bailed out Wall Street to the tune of 1.5 trillion (WTAF, y'all?!?!?!), but these closures mean that these huge corporations are losing A LOT of money. And that is NOT a decision any of them take lightly or based on media alone.
- Shanghai Disney closed on January 25 (11,000 workers, 11.8 million visitors).
- Because LA county went under a state of emergency on March 4, but DisneyLand didn't announce it would close until March 10.
- Because on March 10, Walmart announced a 2 week paid leave policy if there is need of a quarantine. Considering many of Walmart's employees remain on public assistance, they're not exactly a giving company when they don't have to be.
- Because Broadway is dark the rest of the month starting March 12. There are more than 1,000,000 Broadway viewers every month, and a one month closure negates $152,083,333 in ticket sales only, not counting the wider impact on hotels and dining from tourism. Producers are NOT going to take out almost 10% of their profits for the year on media frenzy!
- Because at the corporate level, both Disney and Darden decided to instate paid sick leave, but swear it had nothing to do with Coronavirus.
- Because all Disney parks are closed now.
- Because cruises shut down.
(Also, why am I so fixated on Disney? Loads of reasons, but mostly because I am ALWAYS fixated on Disney, and also it is a MASSIVE business that employs 62,000 in Orlando ALONE.)
Symptoms, Findings, Etc.
- CDC's symptoms.
- Radiologists are finding that eventually, basically everyone who has had COVID-19 has the same patterns in their lungs, although not from the beginning.
I can't find one right now, but I plan to add a link to a chart with a prevalence of symptoms here, too. Because it is NOT like a cold and not really like the flu, so even very informed people are not aware of this one.
For fun:
